Gods Toilet
We would have started rehearsing again in the summer vacations of 94, but Andrew C went traveling to Canada. To fight the boredom, the rest of us got together with my brother Tom (who played bass), and Paul Foster (from Exeter group Plasterscene, who wanted a chance to play some guitar). Andrew W was also looking for an opportunity to play guitar, so it all came together perfectly. We rehearsed under the name Geekscene, and even looked into doing a gig, but it didn't materialise. We wrote a number of songs during this time, one of which was this excellent Andrew W song. So when the Zeros got back together, for a set of farewell gigs, we knew this had to be part of it. For me, it's probably one of the best songs we ever played. It's a real shame we didn't get a chance to record it. Looking back, the titles probably the only bad thing about it. The rest of the lyrics still read well. To get the full idea you would have to hear the song. There may not be many words but the few there are, pack a big punch.

How can you say that and expect me to laugh,
yes I'm crying, tears I hope will drown you dead.

It's so unfair but who's to care, what have I done to deserve this.
Tears and rain they wash my eyes, or is the big man having a piss.

Sorrow to anger, and back again.
Keep it safe inside, just like all men.

You think that's said it all, you think I've said it all.
You must be joking, I've only just begun.

I'm too tiered to do the actions, so I hope my words will speak.
The futures looking pretty dodgy, and the passed is seeming bleak.

Tomorrow's Been Canceled
We only ever intentded to get back together for some summer gigs, but inevitably new ideas started to appear. The music for this one, was pure Andrew C, and showed him at his tuneful, but edgy best. In terms of a classic song, this would have given 'We Were Geeks' a run for it's money. As the summer of 95 drew to a close, we toyed with the idea of recording these last few songs. We even booked a date with John Fitzsimons, but after a final rehearsal we decided not to. We didn't realise how final this time together was. It's quite apt really, that a song about lethargy, should go unrecorded because we felt it was too much effort. We made one last appearance together that Christmas, on Tele West cable channel, and then that was it.
Tomorrow's been canceled, because of lack of interest,
Tomorrow's been canceled, because no one can get out of bed.
Tomorrow's been canceled, because of lack of interest,
Tomorrow's been canceled, because no one can be bothered to get dressed.

(more to come, when I've dug them out)

Cover Versions: 1990-95
Running Free - Iron Maiden
When it came to our first rehearsal we didn't really know what to do. It was Shamus who made a constructive suggestion, and out came his Iron Maiden rock score. We chose the only song we could have possibly attempted. Andrew and I had played some of it before, in our guitar lessons. This gave us the helping hand we needed to get started. We didn't ever intend to learn it properly.
WildThing/Satisfaction - Troggs/Rolling Stones
Between the four of us, we knew how to play bits of these two songs. So instead of learning the whole lot, we joined them together and made a punk jam out of it. I didn't really know many of the words either, so it was more a case of shouting, grunting, and even adding lines from 'I should be so lucky'. I remember at one gig Andrew starting the song off with the 'smells like teen spirit ' intro. Getting those students all worked up, and then BAM! Into our weird jam we went. It used to be a good set closer. We used to go really nuts, because they were such easy songs to play. Well they way we did them was!
Anarchy in the UK - Sex Pistols
This was our first serious attempt to learn another groups song. Shamus and I loved the Sex Pistols, so it was definitely our idea to cover the song, but the others soon enjoyed playing it.
I Turned into a Martian - The Misfits
Out of frustration with the lack of song writing, I suggested we do a Misfits cover. I thought it would be a fun way of getting us to another level. The other tracks we considered doing were: Hate Breeder's, and Mommy Can I go out and Kill Tonight. This song used to go down very well with the Exeter College crowds, and we really loved playing it. We even did it faster than the Misfits on a few occasions, and that's saying something. Edward!!!
Mother Of Christ - Alice Donut
This is another song originally from our Geekscene rehearsals. Again this was the others pandering to my tastes. I was heavily in to Alice Donut at the time, and so this was my addition to our final gigs. This was another song that used to go down very well live. I remember some people were most disappointed when they found out it wasn't our song. We should have kept quiet because no one would have known any different.
Fire - Jimi Hendrix
To balance out the punk side of our final gigs, we decided to do a more classic cover version too. This was Andrew C's choice, and it fitted in very well with the rest of the set. We added an extended jam to the end, which saw Andrew soloing furiously, me blasting away on the trombone, while Ed, and Andrew funked up an almighty backing rhythm. This was how we finished each of those last few gigs. What a great way to be remembered.
